Since its beginning in 2010, John Lawson Legacy Days has been shaped by passionate individuals dedicated to preserving Eastern North Carolina’s history. While many of those early contributors have since passed on, their spirit and commitment live on through this event.

Eric Cantu
February 12, 1946 - January 2, 2024
We honor the memory of Eric Cantu—a beloved local hero, Army veteran, and longtime supporter of John Lawson Legacy Days. His dedication, kindness, and service to both his country and community left a lasting impact, and his presence at the event will be deeply missed.​


George Worthington
April 14, 1948 - September 12, 2023
The Grifton Museum and John Lawson Legacy Days mourn the loss of loyal supporter and dear friend, George Worthington. A passionate historian with a deep knowledge of the Civil War, George played a meaningful role in preserving and sharing North Carolina’s rich past. Even shortly before his passing, he was actively preparing for the 2023 John Lawson Legacy Days. His dedication, enthusiasm, and friendship will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Ronald Clark

John Lawson Legacy Days honors the memory of Ronald Clark, a devoted reenactor whose passion for living history brought authenticity and energy to every event. Through his portrayals, he helped visitors connect with North Carolina’s past in meaningful, memorable ways. His absence will be deeply felt, but his legacy lives on in the stories he helped tell.


James "Jim" Edward White, III
April 24, 1949 - February 11, 2023
John Lawson Legacy Days remembers James “Jim” White III, a passionate educator, craftsman, and loyal supporter of our event. Jim shared his knowledge and skills with visitors of all ages, especially through his love of woodworking and traditional trades. His enthusiasm for teaching and preserving history helped shape the spirit of the event, and his presence will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of learning from him.
Leland Tucker
March 9, 1948 - December 31, 2021
John Lawson Legacy Days honors the memory of B. Leland Tucker, a beloved supporter whose love for antique tractors and North Carolina heritage made him a cherished part of our event. Leland’s passion for restoring and showcasing old farm equipment brought joy to visitors and helped connect generations to the tools and traditions of the past. His warm spirit and dedication will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.


Jerry Harris
February 2, 1945 - March 11, 2022
John Lawson Legacy Days honors the memory of Jerry Clinton Harris, affectionately known as “Mr. Fixit,” whose resourcefulness and skill were invaluable to our event. Jerry’s ability to repair and restore anything that needed attention, combined with his passion for history, helped keep the spirit of the event alive. His contributions, both practical and personal, will be deeply missed, and his legacy as a dedicated supporter of living history will continue to inspire all who knew him.
James Cooper

John Lawson Legacy Days remembers James Cooper, whose deep passion for primitive history and skills brought a unique authenticity to our event. James dedicated much of his life to preserving the traditions and tools of early American life, and his knowledge and enthusiasm were always evident in his work. His contributions to the event helped educate and inspire countless visitors, and he will be fondly remembered by all who shared in his love for history.

We also honor the memories of Mike Gaskins, Bill Cox, and Bette Koon, whose contributions to John Lawson Legacy Days have left a lasting impact. Their dedication, passion for history, and unwavering support helped shape the event into what it is today. While their presence is deeply missed, their legacy lives on in the traditions they helped preserve and the community they helped build. Their memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege to know them.
